Merlimau key to winning Malacca

Image
The next battleground is seen as crucial for Pakatan Rakyat because it is a gateway to capturing a BN stronghold. KUALA LUMPUR: PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin considers the Merlimau state seat as a mandatory stepping-stone for Pakatan Rakyat to gain inroads into Malacca. As such, he said, the coalition must give serious consideration to the selection of its candidate for the March 6 by-election there if it is to secure this crucial victory. The Merlimau seat fell vacant after BNs two-time assemblyman Mohamad Hidhir Abu Hassan died of heart complications in mid-January. He defeated PAS Jasme Tompang by a majority of 2,154 votes in the 2008 general election. While Malacca Pakatan leaders are adamant to resume their fight for the seat, the state PKR has recently offered Shamsul as a potential candidate. Pakatan national leaders will meet soon to decide between both parties and Shamsul has declined to speculate on the likelihood of his candidacy. This matter is in the hands of the P...

Muddy waters: Post-Tenang reflections

Image
The most defining feature of this election was the weather. It was dreadful, and it negatively affected the polling. COMMENT Malaysia's 14th by-election since March 2008 scored another victory in the BN column, as they held onto their seat. This was expected, as it was home ground for Umno and the contest was purely about the winning majority. Even with the lower voter turnout, Umno did well with a comfortable and higher majority of 3,707. Rather than provide a numerical assessment of the voting results, let me share some broader observations and tensions that arise from the Tenang campaign. Despite the centrality of machinery and money, this election highlights the increasing challenges of engaging the diverse electorate in Malaysia. Arguably, the dynamics of the by-election in Johor muddy the waters, making the decisions about national electoral strategies and tactics even more complex. Decision to proceed irresponsible The most defining feature of this election was the weather. ...

On Tenang

Image
I am not surprised and have already anticipated how the election outcome turns out to be from the beginning, with the exception that heavy rain throughout the whole day yesterday has affected the voting turnover. But what the opposition claimed to have succeeded is primarily on having more Chinese votes than ever and there majority that UMNO wants by 5000 could not be reached at all. In the beginning, mainly it's because of the population composition of Labis and Tenang, it reminded me of how it was way back in Bagan Pinang, with the exception that there is no popularity factor taken into account. Bagan Pinang was like Permatang Pauh, because of the candidate's popularity, they won there - and nothing more. And unlike other places, the people's mentality in Johor is much more backwater in nature than the other states where previous by-elections took place. PKR and Anwar Ibrahim To Be Blamed PKR actually has the biggest blame to take among the three component parties of Paka...

Protests in Egypt: Lively, but a calm before the storm

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) -- Fed up with years of corruption, poverty and lack of opportunity, activists in Cairo, Alexandria and other restive Egyptian cities robustly took to the streets in peaceful rallies Monday. Angry demonstrators continue to protest the rule of embattled Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, who remains in power despite repeated grass-roots calls for his ouster and widespread dissatisfaction over his Cabinet selections. But many observers regard the seething rage of the past week as the calm before the storm. Egyptians plan another huge wave of demonstrations on Tuesday, "million-man" marches in Cairo and Alexandria that will occur a week after the historic anti-government protests began. Egyptian security forces in Cairo have been setting up concrete barriers around key locations ahead of the march, including iconic sites such as Tahrir, or Liberation, Square, the Egypt State TV building, and the Interior Ministry. The ongoing demonstrations, inspired in part by...

Segera Bawa Pulang Rakyat Malaysia

Say What? Ketuanan Rakyat?

Say What? Ketuanan Rakyat? It has indeed been a strange and surreal one month in Selangor. You have the spectacle of a state government grappling with the problem of having as its top civil servant a person who is not to its liking. And all the time while doing this, it had neither the courage nor the honesty to admit what the real problem is The real problem that the Menteri Besar of Selangor has to contend with is not Mohd Khusrin Munawi per se, but rather the poor relations that the MB has with the Palace.Aktivis Reformasi by Aktivis Reformasi *, via e-mail It has indeed been a strange and surreal one month in Selangor. Small Indian Civets: Protected wildlife species becoming a top Thai boutique coffee and perfume performer

Small Indian Civets (Viverricula indica) are found in areas of thick vegetation and shrubbery in South and Southeast Asia. The animals bring about large-scale economic benefits to some Thai farmers, thanks to the production of their unctuous secretions painfully scraped from a gland near the genital organs (known as Choline Bitartrate) and the excrement of the animals which is used for civet coffee. In Thailand, the properties of such animal ointment leads it to being used as an ingredient in traditional medicines, helping to strengthen good health, while the processed secretion is used as a fixative in perfumes. As choline bitartrate from small Indian civets is in high demand and in short supply, it is quite pricy and sold to middlemen at around Bt200,000 per kilo (US$6,500) in Thailand. After the cleaning process, the animal ingredient will be sold to traditional medicine producers at about Bt300,000-400,000 ($9,500-123,) per kilo. "Theres no guarantee on how many civets can pro...

SOS Malaysian Voters please help bring change

Image
The events unfolding in Tenang by-election in Johore again illustrated the huge odds those striving for positive change in Malaysia are up against. Not only were the police, Fire Departments, etc, that were mobilized to help ferry voters to the polling stations discriminating against those perceived to be opposition supporters and not deploying or deploying minimal help to perceived opposition strongholds, the wastepapers (terms I now use to refer to the MSM newspapers) and even the online news site the Malaysian Insiders failed to report this discrimination that was only reported by Malaysiakini (they deserve our support for true journalism) as you can see in the article reproduced below courtesy of Malaysiakini: Pakatan decries selective assistance to voters . Reforms (positive changes) will not be easily achieved in Malaysia and those struggling against such odds really need the support of Malaysians and this is a SOS call to them to mobilize and help in whatever way they can to spe...

Charge author for sedition, use Hindraf novel

Image
Hindraf's P Uthayakumar also wants DPM Muhyiddin Yassin and education officers to be charged for introducing Interlok in schools. BUTTERWORTH: National laureate Abdullah Hussain and Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin should be among those charged for sedition with regard to the Interlok novel, said Hindraf Makkal Sakti. Speaking to FMT yesterday, the movements legal adviser P Uthayakumar suggested that his book on the Nov 25, 2007 Hindraf rally be introduced in schools instead. The lawyer, who was detained under the Internal Security Act in the aftermath of the rally, claimed that his book was more current, effective, realistic and relevant than Interlok. The (students) will realise the mistakes of their forefathers and can then explore all ways and means to address and resolve the pressing Indian issues, he said. Meanwhile, Uthayakumar also demanded that Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar explain why action was not taken against those responsible for introduc...

Japan, U.S. arranging for Kan`s U.S. visit in late June

TOKYO, Jan 31 (Kyodo) - The Japanese and U.S. governments are trying to arrange for Prime Minister Naoto Kan to visit the United States in late June to meet with President Barack Obama and issue a joint statement on common strategic goals and vision on the bilateral alliance, Japanese government sources said Sunday. The visit had been expected for the spring but June has come to be favored in light of the schedule of Japanese parliament, with the ordinary Diet session slated to adjourn June 22, and other factors. Prior to the envisaged summit in Washington, Japanese and U.S. foreign and defense ministers will gather for a two-plus-two national security meeting during Japan's holidays from late April to early May to update the two countries' common strategic goals agreed on in 2005, the sources said. But Kan and Obama are unlikely to be able to make progress on the contentious bilateral plan to relocate the U.S. Marines' Futenma Air Station within Okinawa Prefecture amid per...

From special position to ketuanan

Image
Law professor Shad Saleem Faruqi reckons that Bumiputera is merely a term coined for political mileage. KUALA LUMPUR: There is nothing racial about Article 160 of the Federal Constitutions definition of the word Malays, according to Law professor Shad Saleem Faruqi. He said there was no requirement for one to be from the Malay stock. Shad, who is from Universiti Teknologi Maras Law faculty, said the article merely states that one has to be Muslim, practice the Malay customs, speak Malay language, is born in Malaya and has at least one Malay parent. However, this definition of Malay differs from that in the Malay Reservation Enactment. Indonesian Malays and Thai Malays who do not qualify under Article 160 of the Federal Constitution however qualify under the state enactment. Which is how so many plots of land are bought by Indonesians, he explained to a 100-strong crowd who attended the Bar Councils Forum on Race Relations and Religion: Towards Equality and Non-discrimination yesterday....

Egyptian Museum

Image
Vandals ripped the heads off two mummies and tossed relics onto the ground in Cairo's Egyptian Museum, the country's antiquities chief said Sunday. But the group of about nine people did not manage to steal anything from the museum's collection, according to Zahi Hawass, secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities. The would-be thieves, who broke into the museum Friday around 6 p.m., were arrested and jailed, Hawass said. The museum has stepped up security and is now guarded by Egypt's army, he said. The antiquities chief said 10 small artifacts were also damaged, but can be restored. The Egyptian Museum is located in Cairo's Tahrir Square, which has been a focal point for anti-government protests.

Kit Siang admonishes MCA paper for lies

Image
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 30 Lim Kit Siang warned The Star today from concocting lies and denied challenging the MCA president to resign. Lim was commenting on a report in the MCA-owned paper which claimed that DAPs attack against the party was an an attempt to divert the communitys attention from the various breakthroughs the MCA has achieved since Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek became party president in March last year. The report also claimed that Lim had had challenged Dr Chua to step down if he failed to gain support from the Chinese community during the by-election. Lim (picture) said that he had only criticized Chua after MCAs continued attack against PAS during the Tenang by-election and allegations that DAP would not be able to stop the Islamist party form an Islamic state. The DAP veteran pointed out that Umno has also been using MCAs fear tactics while campaigning for Malay voters. In the Tenang by-election campaign, Umno leaders have been telling Malay voters that PAS has betrayed Is...

Sabah govt glitch leaves workers without wages

Image
No salaries for five months, Putatan district council workers are 'suffering in silence', says Sabah Progressive People's Party. KOTA KINABALU: Its been five months since the 50 staff at the Putatan district council, in Sabah, received their salaries. During this period there was a government announcement on price hikes on oil and fuel to complement an earlier round of subsidy withdrawals which resulted in the cost of everyday necessities to spiral beyond the reach of the low-wage earners. Throw-in school reopening, Christmas and now Chinese New Year expenses, does the ruling administration understand the nightmare it has caused the wage earning council workers? Well, Sabah Progressive Peoples Party (SAPP) does not think so. This is ridiculousHow do you expect the workers to make ends meet when they do not get their pay for five months? Maybe the ministers and assemblymen should not be given payments for five months and lets see how they feel about it, snapped SAPP vice-pre...
